The Allegheny Reservoir sits inside the Allegheny National Forest, twenty-seven miles long with roughly ninety miles of shoreline. All the timber was cut before the impoundment filled in 1965, so the basin is deep, clear and short on subsurface structure, and fish are found by covering water rather than by working cover. Trolling is the primary technique here for muskellunge, northern pike and walleye, keyed to where the fish move through the season. Reservoir days are sold as full outings only, eight hours minimum for one to three anglers at $500, and every musky and pike trip is catch and release. The boat is a 21-foot shallow-draft JetCraft with a 200-horsepower inboard and a 15-horsepower kicker for holding controlled speeds.
