Trips work the Columbia River estuary at Buoy 10, fished from a 2020 Willie Nemesis of 26 feet rigged with suspension seats and high sides for the chop that builds where the river meets the bar. The boat runs out of the West Mooring Basin Marina in Astoria, Oregon, conveniently located just west of the Astoria-Megler Bridge, which puts the fishing minutes from the ramp rather than an hour’s run away. The season has a definite shape: Chinook salmon begins the first week in August and runs through mid to late August, after which the operation transitions to coho, or silver, salmon fishing throughout September. King and fall Chinook and coho are the fish being targeted through that window.
