Crystal River, Florida · Fishes Homosassa River
Captain Teddy Shupe works the near-shore flats of the Homosassa River along with the backcountry creeks, rocks and oyster bars behind them, in clear water edged by lush mangrove shoreline and vast grass flats. Two boats cover it: a 24-foot Carolina Skiff, and a 1754 Gator Tail mud boat that comes into its own in winter, when low tides drain the flats and concentrate fish where a conventional hull cannot follow. Inshore trips are sold as a two-hour Early Bird Special starting at 7am for $250, a four-hour half day at $500 and a six-hour full day at $700, each covering one or two people with additional anglers at $100 apiece; the mud boat takes one or two. Coast Guard rules cap the boat at six anglers. Fishing licences, gear, tackle and bait, bottled water and a cooler with ice are included. The named quarry is redfish, snook, speckled trout, black drum, flounder and sheepshead, with tarpon seasonally.
