About the Vermilion Bay

Vermilion Bay lies in south central Louisiana, taking the Vermilion River from the north and a large volume of Atchafalaya River water from the east through the Atchafalaya and Wax Lake outlets. That river influence is the single most important fact about this estuary. Vermilion Bay is markedly fresher than most Louisiana coastal bays, and the salinity line moves substantially with river stage. The gauge near Intracoastal City reads water temperature, stage, salinity and turbidity.

The bay is broad and shallow, with soft mud bottom across most of its area, oyster reefs on the harder ground, and marsh shoreline throughout. It connects west toward the Gulf through Southwest Pass and east into East and West Cote Blanche bays and Atchafalaya Bay. Water is usually turbid, and after high river stages the eastern side can run nearly fresh while the western side holds salt.

Red drum are the most dependable fishery and are worked along the marsh edges, in the cuts and over shell. Spotted seatrout are present and are best on the reefs and in the higher salinity water toward the passes, though the trout fishing here is more variable than in the saltier bays to the east. Black drum and sheepshead hold on structure and shell, southern flounder use the drop-offs, and Atlantic croaker, blue crab and crevalle jack are common. In the fresher reaches largemouth bass and alligator gar appear, which is a genuinely unusual mix to find alongside redfish.

Wind is a serious factor on a bay this shallow and open, and a strong southerly turns it unfishable quickly. The protected bayous and cuts along the north shore are the standard fallback when the open bay is blown out, and they hold fish in their own right.

Access is through Intracoastal City, Cypremort Point and the surrounding parish roads. This is working coast rather than resort coast, and services are limited once past Abbeville.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Vermilion Bay.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. The license lasts until you withdraw it (section 4).

You keep the copyright. The license is not exclusive, so you can use the photo anywhere else and license it to anyone else. We will not sell your photo, license it on to anyone else on its own, or use it in paid advertising for a third party.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
