Juniata Troutfitters
Tyrone, Pennsylvania · Fishes Little Juniata River
Juniata Troutfitters guides the Little Juniata River, the limestone-influenced stream that runs from Altoona down past Tyrone and Spruce Creek in central Pennsylvania. Trips are walk-and-wade on the 13.7-mile catch-and-release section, which fishes twelve months of the year and produces both surface and sub-surface activity; the company’s own description of the water is of hatches thick enough that fish rise all around the angler, and of a river that nymphs as well as it fishes dry. A full day is eight hours on the water and includes a streamside lunch; a half day runs four hours. Chest waders and wading boots are needed rather than hip boots, because the river is cold and runs deep, and rental is offered. Rates start at $450 for one angler with one guide and $500 for two anglers with one guide, with larger parties split across additional guides.
