Fishing With Captain Kirk
Menasha, Wisconsin · Fishes Fox River (Wisconsin)
The water is the Fox River below the dam at De Pere, and the whole proposition is the spring walleye run: fish push up out of the bay, stop at the dam and stack there, and the guiding covers pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn. The season usually opens in late March, right after ice-out. Spring here is catch and release apart from a single fish of twenty-eight inches or better, and twenty walleyes in a day is described as unremarkable. Vertical jigging is the method, with lifts of twelve to eighteen inches a sensible starting point and a tight line the thing that matters; casting and dragging jigs are the alternatives, and shallow water gets a jig and plastic combination. Three-eighths ounce jigs in chartreuse, live minnows and three-inch Gulp minnows are the terminal end. One or two anglers at a time, gear and bait supplied, from $325.
