Trips run out of Homosassa on Florida’s Nature Coast, launching at MacRae’s of Homosassa on South Cherokee Way. Red Ed’s describes the Homosassa as a spring-fed, fertile river whose tidal flushing between the islands delivers food and creates ambush scenarios on points and edges, and the clear pristine flats of Homosassa Bay, with mangrove shorelines, dense seagrass beds and spoil islands, as water made for drifting or easing along with a trolling motor or push pole. Fishing is a custom itinerary aboard a 24-foot boat, from a single day up to multi-day all-inclusive packages of three days to a week or longer. Redfish peak in March and the first two weeks of April, then again through the hotter months of July, August and September, with the biggest fish in October and November; speckled sea trout hold year-round and the flats muds show from late March into May; cobia arrive late March and early April; migratory tarpon usually start arriving at the end of April and stay until late August. Because the main spring-fed rivers here hold about 72 degrees all year, fish swarm into them in winter. A fishing licence, fuel, a cooler with ice for the catch and trip photographs are included.
