About the Lake Conroe

Conroe is the reservoir Houston fishes. The San Jacinto River Authority impounded the West Fork in 1973, and the lake sits close enough to a very large metropolitan area to define its character: heavy recreational boat traffic, a developed and residential south end, and a north end that runs up into the Sam Houston National Forest and stays comparatively wild and quiet.

The bass fishing runs in cycles with the aquatic vegetation, which has been managed hard at some points and has recovered at others. When there is grass, Conroe fishes like a classic East Texas lake, with fish in the vegetation and on its edges and a shallow bite that lasts most of the year. When the grass is gone, it becomes a timber, boat dock and ledge lake, the fish are more concentrated and harder to locate, and the anglers who do well are the ones who have kept up with what actually changed rather than fishing memory.

The hybrid striped bass programme gives Conroe a real open-water fishery alongside the bass. Schooling fish push shad to the surface on summer and autumn mornings, and watching for birds will find them faster than idling around staring at a screen. Catfishing is dependable year round, and the crappie fishery around bridges and brush is better than its reputation.

Conroe is held near a constant level for water supply, so the elevation below moves less dramatically than on the Highland Lakes, but it still earns its place. A pool a foot or two low in late summer means the shoreline grass and laydowns are out of the water entirely, and a rising lake after heavy rain on the West Fork means dirty water pushing down from the north end for several days.

West Fork arm: the upper river end, shallower and first to colour after rain.
Bridges on FM 1097 and SH 105: crappie structure and winter fishing.
Note: weekend recreational traffic on the south end is heavy from spring onward.

Seasons

Winter: crappie on bridges and brush, and deep bass on structure near the dam.
February to April: the main bass season, shallow and in the grass when there is grass.
Summer: hybrids schooling in open water at dawn, catfish on the flats, heavy boat traffic.
Fall: shad move to the creeks and the shallow bass bite returns with cooler mornings.
