About the Lake Arthur
Lake Arthur is the centrepiece of Moraine State Park, an hour north of Pittsburgh, and it is one of the best examples anywhere of a lake built deliberately for recreation and managed accordingly. It is shallow, weedy and fertile, with long shallow arms, extensive vegetation and a slow-speed rule over nearly all of it.
Muskellunge are the signature fish. The state stocks them, the weedy shallow habitat suits them, and Lake Arthur has a long-standing reputation among Pennsylvania muskie anglers as a place where a serious fish is a realistic outcome of a season rather than a lifetime. Largemouth bass fishing in the vegetation is very good, walleye are present and stocked, and northern pike add another predator to the mix.
The panfishing is excellent and much of it is reachable from the bank, which makes Arthur a genuinely good family lake as well as a specialist one. Crappie around the wood and bluegill on the beds in early summer are both dependable.
Moraine is also one of the best-organised fishing parks in the state. There are launches on both shores, marked shoreline access, and enough parking that a busy Saturday does not turn into a queue. For an angler new to muskie fishing, the combination of stocked fish, forgiving water and easy logistics is about as gentle an introduction as the species allows.
The horsepower and speed rules keep the lake calm and slow, and they are the reason it fishes as well as it does on a summer Saturday. Kayaks, canoes and small electric-powered boats are entirely at home here.
