The scenic Smith River is located in the redwoods about ten miles north of Crescent City in Northern California, and it produces some of the largest salmon and steelhead in California. It holds the California state record steelhead, a fish of 28.5 pounds, and it gives up Chinook salmon ranging up to fifty pounds and steelhead of ten to twenty pounds. January, February and March are the months named for it. It is the shortest and the most northerly of the rivers on this operation’s list, and the guiding on it is done under permit from the US Forest Service, which is the arrangement governing commercial access to this water.
