The Eel is an extensive coastal river system and one of the last strongholds of wild steelhead on the West Coast, fished here as a rugged and remote proposition rather than a comfortable one. Prime winter steelhead fishing is December through March, on native winter-run fish fresh from the ocean averaging six to twelve pounds with larger specimens possible. It is weather dependent water: the day is built around clear water windows and storm driven opportunities, and timing the correct conditions is what increases the odds. Coastal steelhead trips are $750. The standard private trips are $475 for a half day of four to five hours on the water and $625 for a full day of seven to eight, with rods and reels available for use and beverages and terminal tackle provided.
