About the Vines Creek

Vines Creek is a small tidal tributary entering the western end of Indian River Bay near Dagsboro. The gauge reads tidal elevation, which is the right measure for a creek that is tidal through essentially its whole fishable length. It is a modest piece of water by any standard, but it is a useful one, because it offers protected fishing and easy access on days when the bay itself or the inlet is unworkable.

The creek runs through marsh and wooded shoreline, narrow at the top and widening steadily toward the bay. The bottom is soft mud with scattered oyster shell and old pilings, and the outside bends carry enough depth to hold fish on a low tide. Water here is brackish and warms fast, and the salinity shifts noticeably with rainfall in the upper creek.

White perch are the most dependable fish in the creek and are taken through most of the year, with the spring spawning run in the upper reach the high point. Striped bass hold in the deeper bends and at the creek mouth, generally schoolies, and are most active on moving water. Summer flounder move up from the bay into the lower creek through summer. Bluefish follow bait in on occasion, and blue crabs are abundant from June onward.

This is small-boat and kayak water, and it is well suited to both. There is a public landing near Dagsboro, and the run down to the open bay is short enough that the creek works equally well as a fishery in its own right or as a sheltered launch point for Indian River Bay.

The creek’s main practical value is as a fallback. When wind shuts down Indian River Bay or the inlet is unfishable, Vines Creek stays workable, and the landing at Dagsboro gives quick access to protected water. Salinity in the upper creek drops sharply after heavy rain, which pushes the perch and stripers further down toward the bay for a few days.

The photo at the top of this page is not Vines Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
