About the Eastern Bay
Eastern Bay is a large arm of the Chesapeake on the Maryland Eastern Shore, bounded by Kent Island to the north, the Tilghman peninsula to the south, and opening west into the main stem of the bay. The gauge at Claiborne reads tidal elevation. This is substantial water, several miles across in places, and it takes in the Miles River and the Wye River as its principal tributaries.
It has the full set of Chesapeake structure. A deep channel runs through the middle, shoal edges and lumps rise off it, and there are extensive shallow flats along both shores with grass beds and hard sand bottom. Bloody Point and the Poplar Island area at the mouth generate strong current and are long-standing producers. The rivers at the head give protected water when the bay itself is blown out.
Striped bass are the fishery. They are here from spring through late autumn, taken by trolling the channel edges, jigging the lumps, and casting the shallow flats at first light, which is as good a light-tackle striper opportunity as the Chesapeake offers. White perch are abundant on hard bottom and around structure all season. Bluefish arrive in summer and can be thick some years. Black drum are taken on the deeper shell bottom in late spring, and blue crabs are a major summer fishery throughout.
Access is straightforward, with public ramps at Claiborne, Kent Narrows and several points on the Miles and Wye, and a large charter fleet works out of Kent Narrows and Tilghman.
Eastern Bay is big enough to build a serious chop, and a northwest wind against an outgoing tide at Bloody Point produces conditions that small boats should avoid outright. The Miles and Wye rivers are the standard refuge on those days and fish well in their own right. Maryland striped bass regulations change by season and area, so check current rules before keeping fish.
