About the Chassahowitzka River

The Chassahowitzka is barely six miles long from its headspring to the Gulf, and almost nothing about it resembles the rivers people picture in Florida. It does not drain a watershed so much as leak out of one. The main spring and a scatter of side vents push a steady flow of clear, cool groundwater out of the limestone, and that water begins mixing with the tide almost immediately. Within a mile or two the bottom shifts from white sand and eelgrass to soft mud, oyster bar and the open grass flats of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge.

That compression is what makes the river worth the trip. A single morning can cover freshwater, brackish and salt conditions without a long run. Local anglers shorten the name to the Chaz, and they fish it as two rivers stacked end to end. The upper river is spring run, clear enough to watch fish refuse a bait, with largemouth bass and the occasional snook holding on the grass edges in the cool water. The lower river opens into a maze of creeks, bars and islands where redfish and spotted seatrout work the tide.

The refuge is the reason the estuary still fishes well. It protects tens of thousands of acres of salt marsh and grass flat that would otherwise have been dredged and walled, and it keeps the shoreline undeveloped nearly the whole way to the Gulf. Manatees use the warm spring flow through the cold months, which shapes both the regulations and the traffic, and the slow zones are enforced.

Tide matters more than time of day here. The flats are shallow enough that a falling tide concentrates redfish against the oyster bars and pushes trout into the deeper creek bends, and a low tide can leave a boat sitting on the bottom for hours if the run was timed badly. Most people fish a shallow skiff or a kayak, and the kayak is genuinely the better tool above the first bend.

Summer brings tarpon to the outside bars and heat to the upper river, while winter pushes fish into the spring runs for the same reason the manatees go there. Fall is the steadiest stretch, with clear water, moving fish and no crowd. The public ramp at the end of Miss Maggie Drive is the practical starting point for nearly everyone.

Seasons

Spring: warming flats and the best redfish sight fishing of the year as the water clears.
Summer: hot and bright, with tarpon on the outside bars and the upper spring run the only cool water.
Fall: the steadiest conditions, clear water and moving fish with far less boat traffic.
Winter: cold fronts push fish and manatees toward the spring flow, concentrating everything upriver.
