The Stillwater is the closest major river to the lodge, clear water off the Beartooth Mountains running down to the Yellowstone, and the lodge is direct that although the name suggests calm water the river is anything but still. Guides work the upper river from the Forest Service boundary down to the Rosebud confluence, and the lower river below it, by drift boat, raft or on foot. The season opens on march browns and baetis and then the Mother’s Day caddis. Summer brings stoneflies, caddis, terrestrials and spruce moths with fish rising through the day on the upper sections, alongside pale morning duns and yellow sallies. Late summer and autumn is hoppers, ants and beetles with baetis returning. Rainbows hold the faster upper water and browns the deeper lower runs, averaging twelve to sixteen inches with rainbows over eighteen.
