About the Logan Creek
Logan Creek drains just over a thousand square miles of northeast Nebraska and joins the Elkhorn River near Uehling in Burt County. Despite the name it is a substantial stream, larger than many waters that get called rivers elsewhere, and it runs for close to a hundred miles through the loess hills and farm ground of Cuming, Wayne and Dodge counties.
The creek is turbid almost all the time. The loess soils of this region give up fine sediment readily, and the water carries a permanent tan cast that has nothing to do with recent rain. That does not hurt the fishing so much as it shapes it. Fish here locate by scent and vibration rather than sight, and the approaches that work are the ones built around that.
Channel catfish are the backbone of the fishery and they are abundant. The deep outside bends, log jams and the mouths of feeder draws all hold them, and cut bait or prepared bait fished on the bottom is the standard method. Flathead catfish are present in the lower reaches and reach serious size, taken on live bait after dark. Largemouth bass, northern pike and bluegill use the slower backwaters, and freshwater drum and common carp are everywhere.
Channelization and streambank erosion have been persistent problems in this watershed, and stretches of the creek have been straightened over the last century. The reaches that retain their meanders fish considerably better, holding deeper water and more woody cover, and local anglers know exactly which those are. Restoration work in the basin has focused on stabilising banks and restoring buffers along the worst of them.
Access runs through county road bridges and a handful of public areas. West Point, Wisner and Oakland are the towns along the corridor, and the Elkhorn River below the confluence offers additional public access.
