About the Savage River

The Savage below Savage River Reservoir is a small river with a large reputation. Four miles of pocket water and ledges run from the dam to the Potomac at Bloomington, holding wild brown trout and native brook trout in cold, clear water that stays fishable all summer. Special regulations, fly fishing only with catch-and-release on most of it, have protected the fishery for decades, and the fish are wary in a way that stocked water never produces.

It is technical fishing. The river is boulder-strewn and fast, the pools are short, and the trout see enough anglers to be selective. Small nymphs, careful approaches and short accurate casts are the technique; the standing joke is that the Savage teaches humility faster than it gives up fish. The same water is also a world-class whitewater venue, and scheduled recreational releases turn the river into an unfishable torrent on specific dates, which are published in advance.

The gauge sits immediately below the dam and reads the release. Base flows are modest, often in the tens of cfs, which is exactly when the fishing is best and the wading is easy. Whitewater releases push it into the hundreds and end the fishing for the day, so check the release calendar before driving out. Cold bottom water keeps summer temperatures in a good range even when the air is hot.

Frostburg and Cumberland are the nearest towns, with Deep Creek Lake half an hour west and the North Branch of the Potomac right at the bottom of the run if you want a second river in the same day.

Access

Savage River Dam: the top of the tailwater, parking and immediate access.
Savage River Road: gravel road paralleling the whole four miles with numerous pullouts.
Upper catch-and-release section: fly fishing only, the most protected water.
Piney Grove and the mid-river pools: walk-in access from the road.
Bloomington and the North Branch Potomac confluence: the bottom of the run.

Seasons

Year-round with special fly-fishing regulations on most of the river.
April through June: the strongest hatch season, comfortable base flows.
July and August: cold releases in mountain shade; the best summer trout water in Maryland.
September through March: low clear water, wild browns in spawning colors, very few anglers.
