Montrose Anglers
Montrose, Colorado · Fishes Uncompahgre River
This is the town water. The Uncompahgre rises high in the windswept San Juans, and by the time it reaches Montrose it is running through the middle of the city – a stretch the shop reckons may be the best kept secret in local fly fishing, precisely because of where it is. Trips here are sold two ways, float-and-wade or walk-and-wade, with a half day at four hours and a full day at six to seven. Brown trout, rainbow trout and cutbows are the fish, and the river holds up across the calendar: midge hatches carry the winter, terrestrials and stoneflies the summer. A rod and reel, flies, leader and tippet, water and snacks are included, with lunch added on full days, and the guide handles transport. No more than three anglers fish with one guide.
