Art Teter guides two of the Shasta-Cascade’s hardest wild trout waters out of Fall River Mills. On Hat Creek he works the three-mile wild trout section running from the Hat Creek Powerhouse down to the confluence with the Pit River, clear glassy meadow water with steady year-round temperatures, heavy weed growth and, by his own account, thousands of trout per mile. The Pit gives him more than thirty miles of remote canyon below Lake Britton, split into three reaches by dams and powerhouses and running at about 300 cfs through the prime part of the season since the FERC relicensing. He calls it a virtual rock garden and fishes it with short line nymphing, high sticking with or without an indicator, with caddis and the odd mayfly bringing fish up in the evenings from June onward. It is open year around, which makes it winter trout water as well. Wading is difficult on both and above average wading skills are a plus. Half days are six hours of fishing and full days are set to the party; lunch comes with a full day and rods and reels are supplied if needed, with the client bringing terminal tackle.
