Gold Hill, Oregon · Fishes Umpqua River
Launching near Roseburg puts this outfit on the middle and lower Umpqua, and its own page is unusually specific about what that water gives you: deep holding runs, long tailouts, classic steelhead seams and excellent drift-boat water throughout. Winter steelhead is the main event, December through March with January and February called prime, while smallmouth bass fill in from late spring into summer. The techniques listed are side-drifting with roe, back-bouncing through deeper slots, pulling plugs in tailouts and light-tackle presentations in softer water, with the emphasis on drift control and boat positioning. A full day is seven hours on the water at $300 a person for two or more and $600 for a single, and rods, reels, bait, tackle, safety equipment, hands-on instruction and end-of-day fish cleaning are included. Licence, food and drinks are not.
