Jack Trout Fly Fishing has guided Hat Creek since 1994 and sells it as one of California’s well renowned spring creeks, fishing the water from Power House #2 down to Baum Lake and the lower reach near the weir before it joins the Pit River at Lake Britton. The pitch is productive and predictable dry fly fishing for rainbows and the occasional brown trout, built on daily mayfly spinner falls, afternoon caddis and the annual Salmon Fly, Hexagenia, Drake and October Caddis hatches, with three, four or five weight rods and floating lines the recommended tools, and with dry fly, nymph and streamer work through all sections. A Hat Creek day is $550 for one or two anglers including all gear, flies and a streamside lunch. The Pit River programme covers sections 1, 3, 4 and 5, about thirty to forty minutes from the town of Burney, open all year in all sections for catch and release fly fishing and worked with high stick nymphing without indicators through the hydro water and the edges. Simms G4 waders and boots, rods, reels, wading staffs and a streamside gourmet lunch are supplied on every trip.
