Reel Adventures works the Pit River as an extremely nutrient rich tailwater fishery, divided by PG&E’s powerhouses into the Pit 1, Pit 3, Pit 4 and Pit 5 reaches and hosting a thriving population of strong, hard pulling wild rainbow trout alongside crawdads and small forage fish. Pit 1 is commonly accessed and fished using inflatable fishing rafts, with two different beats to float, and fishes best during the cooler months early in spring and summer and again in the fall. Pit 3 sits below Lake Britton dam, and the Pit 4 and Pit 5 sections carry the lower canyon water, open to fishing all year around under special regulations. The guide is blunt that this is not a particularly easy river to wade and certainly not a river for everyone, and that wading staffs are absolutely necessary on all reaches, which is much of the argument for hiring somebody who knows it. Anglers can look forward to plenty of solitude and secluded fishing. Parties typically stay in nearby Fall River or Burney, in Redding, or at McArthur-Burney Falls State Park.
