About the Broadkill River
The Broadkill River runs east from Milton through the Prime Hook marshes to Roosevelt Inlet at Lewes, where it meets the Delaware Bay. Its value as a fishery comes from the gradient: the upper river above Milton is essentially fresh and holds largemouth bass and catfish, the middle river is brackish marsh full of white perch and striped bass, and the lower river below the Broadkill Beach road runs salt enough for flounder, bluefish and black drum. The USGS gauge near Milton reports water temperature along with salinity and dissolved oxygen, which makes it unusually useful for reading where that gradient sits on a given week.
Striped bass are the most consistently targeted fish, holding around the marsh points, bridge structure and the inlet rocks. White perch are abundant and underrated, and they carry the winter and early spring fishery when little else cooperates. Summer flounder move into the lower river and inlet from late spring, weakfish appear in the deeper holes in some years, black drum push through the bay mouth in May and June, and the upper reaches hold a genuine largemouth bass and channel catfish fishery.
Most guided work here is small-boat and kayak based. The river is narrow and winding through the marsh, so light-tackle casting to banks, points and drains is the working method, and the paddle fishery out of Milton has grown steadily. Larger boats stage out of Lewes and fish the inlet and the bay edge rather than running far up the river. Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge borders much of the middle river, which keeps development off the banks.
Access is good for a small state. Milton has town launches, Prime Hook has refuge access, and Lewes provides ramps and shoreline at the inlet end. Delaware requires a fishing license with a separate surf-fishing vehicle permit for the beaches, and the DNREC link below covers the current tidal and non-tidal rules — worth reading closely here, since a single trip on this river can cross both.
