About the Hidden River
Hidden River runs through the maze of spring fed creeks, islands and salt marsh that lies between the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka rivers on Florida’s Nature Coast, and it is characteristic of a stretch of shoreline unlike anywhere else in the state. The gauge here reads discharge, stage and velocity, which is unusual for tidal water and possible only because these creeks carry a steady spring flow that keeps them moving even when the tide is slack.
The defining feature of this coast is clarity and temperature stability. Groundwater emerges from the Floridan aquifer at close to a constant seventy two degrees year round, and that steady flow keeps the creeks clear and moderates the water when the Gulf turns cold in winter or hot in summer. Fish know it. When a hard winter front pushes across the shallow Gulf flats, snook, tarpon and redfish move up into the spring runs for thermal refuge, and the fishery concentrates dramatically.
Outside the creeks the bottom is limestone rock and turtle grass in water that is often only two or three feet deep for miles offshore. Redfish work the rock and the oyster bars, spotted seatrout hold over the grass, and the whole flat is best fished on a moving tide from a shallow draft skiff or a kayak. The rock is unforgiving and local knowledge matters more here than almost anywhere, which is why the guide trade is strong.
Then there is the tarpon. Homosassa built its reputation on the migratory tarpon that arrive on the outer flats in late spring, and it remains one of the most storied fly fishing destinations in the world for that fish. Much of the surrounding backcountry sits inside the Chassahowitzka and Crystal River national wildlife refuges, which keeps development off the water and the habitat intact.
