About the Storm Lake

Storm Lake is a shallow natural lake of roughly 3,000 acres in Buena Vista County, northwest Iowa, sitting immediately against the city that shares its name. It is a prairie pothole lake in character — broad, wind-exposed and averaging only about ten feet deep — which makes it productive, turbid and highly responsive to weather. The USGS gauge at Storm Lake reads both stage and water temperature, and the temperature record is the more useful of the two for timing the spring walleye and white bass movements.

Walleye are the management priority and are supported by consistent stocking rather than by significant natural reproduction. They are taken along the rip-rap, the rock reefs placed as habitat, the dredge cuts and the deeper mid-lake water in summer. Because the lake is shallow and wind-mixed, walleye here feed through the day far more readily than they do on clearer lakes, and a good chop on the rocks is a genuine advantage rather than a problem.

White bass are abundant and provide fast, accessible fishing when they school on shad in open water, often through the summer and early fall. Yellow perch and black crappie support the panfish effort, bluegill are common around any remaining vegetation and dock structure, and channel catfish are numerous and can be caught from shore with very little equipment. Northern pike are present in modest numbers.

A long-running dredging and watershed program has worked to counter the sediment loading that comes with an intensively farmed drainage, and the lake’s habitat structures were placed as part of that effort. Access is straightforward with several public ramps and a great deal of city shoreline open to bank fishing. Wind is the main practical limit; the fetch is long and a small boat can be pinned quickly on a windy afternoon.

Seasons

Spring: the strongest walleye fishing of the year on the rip-rap and rock reefs from April into May, timed off rising water temperature; white bass follow as the water reaches the sixties.
Summer: walleye spread into open water and along the cuts; white bass school hard on shad, and channel catfish fishing is excellent from shore through the warm months.
Fall: walleye and perch return to the rock and shoreline structure through October and November, and the lake fishes well with far less recreational traffic.
Winter: an accessible ice fishery for perch, crappie and walleye from late December into February, with easy walk-on access from the city shoreline.
