About the Houghton Lake
Houghton Lake is the largest inland lake in Michigan and one of the shallowest waters of its size anywhere. It runs barely twenty feet at its deepest point and averages far less, which makes it a weed lake rather than a structure lake: cabbage, coontail and bulrush beds are the cover, and finding the right edge is the whole game.
Walleye are the primary fishery, stocked and managed by the state, and they are caught along the weed edges and over the flats rather than off any deep break. Northern pike are abundant in the vegetation and grow to good size. Panfish, especially bluegill, crappie and yellow perch, are numerous enough that the lake is a genuinely reliable place to take children.
Houghton is best known nationally for winter. Tip-Up Town, held on the ice each January, is one of the largest ice fishing festivals in the country, and in a normal winter the lake carries a small temporary city of shanties. The ice fishing for walleye, pike and panfish is the equal of the open-water season and arguably better.
Because the lake is shallow and enormous, wind is the controlling factor in summer. There is very little shelter, the water muddies quickly in a blow, and small boats need to take the forecast seriously.
