About the Otsego Lake
Otsego Lake lies a few miles south of Gaylord in the high country of Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula, in the same neighborhood as the headwaters of the Au Sable and the Manistee. It covers about nineteen hundred acres and runs to roughly seventy feet, which puts it in a useful middle category: deep enough to stay cool and hold fish through August, small enough that a guide can cover the productive water in a morning. A state park occupies part of the eastern shore, which is unusual for a lake of this size in Michigan and makes public access straightforward.
The fishery is a mixed inland-lake program rather than a single-species destination. Walleye are stocked and fished mostly at low light along the deeper breaks and over the mid-lake basin. Smallmouth bass are the most consistent target, holding on gravel and rock through the summer and taking tubes, drop-shot rigs and topwater early. Largemouth occupy the weed beds in the shallower bays, northern pike patrol the same weeds, and yellow perch and rock bass provide steady action for anyone fishing with children or on a slow day.
What recommends the lake to a visiting angler is the surrounding country. Gaylord is a genuine outdoor town, and the guides working Otsego typically also run the Au Sable, the Manistee and the Pigeon within a short drive. That makes a trip flexible: a windy day that ruins the lake can be moved to a river without losing the booking. Winter brings a well-established ice fishery, principally for perch and walleye, with access from the state park side. The lake also sees enough fishing pressure from Gaylord that the fish have seen most presentations, and guides tend to favor finesse tactics and lighter line here rather than the heavier gear that works on wilder northern water.

Seasons
Spring: the late-April opener finds fish shallow, with walleye and pike near the weed edges as the water warms.
Summer: smallmouth bass hold on gravel and rock all day, while walleye fishing moves to dawn and dusk.
Fall: cooling water pulls larger walleye and pike shallow again, and this is the best big-fish stretch of the open season.
Winter: a well-established ice fishery for yellow perch and walleye, with access from the state park side of the lake.
