About the Berlin Lake
Berlin is one of the better walleye lakes in northeast Ohio, a Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoir on the Mahoning River between Youngstown and Akron. It is managed for flood storage first, and that shows in the shape of the season: the lake is drawn down hard through late autumn and winter, then allowed to fill in spring, and the two versions of it fish very differently.
Walleye are the main draw and are stocked and supported by the state. In spring they move up toward the upper end and the feeder creeks; through summer they are caught drifting and trolling the flats and along the old river channel; in autumn they group up again as the water cools. Ohio anglers fish them with worm harnesses, jigs and crankbaits depending on the month, and the lake produces consistently rather than spectacularly.
Alongside the walleye there is a good largemouth population in the shallow arms, smallmouth on the rockier main-lake structure, muskellunge that are stocked and occasionally caught by people who were not looking for them, and dependable crappie and bluegill fishing.
Berlin has a horsepower limit on the main lake, which is the single biggest thing to know before you visit. It keeps recreational traffic low, keeps the water calm, and makes it a genuinely pleasant place to fish on a summer weekend in a way that most reservoirs within an hour of a city are not.
