About the French Creek
French Creek runs east through Custer State Park and out of the Black Hills near Fairburn, and the stretch that matters to anglers is the French Creek Natural Area, a roadless gorge of roughly twelve miles with no trail in the conventional sense. The route through it is the creek bed itself. That single fact shapes everything about fishing here: there is no bank path, no bridge, and no way to sample a pool and drive to the next one. You walk in wet and you walk out wet.
The gorge is cut into Precambrian granite and schist, narrow in places with walls rising well above the water, and it opens periodically into small meadows before closing again. The creek is small, cold and clear, running over granite gravel and slabs with deep green pools behind rock ledges and plunges. Beaver work in the meadow sections creates additional holding water that changes from season to season.
Brown trout are the fish of the gorge, wild and entirely stream-sustained, and brook trout share the colder upper water. Neither runs large. The reward is the setting and the solitude rather than the size of the fish, and the natural area sees a small fraction of the traffic that the rest of Custer State Park absorbs. Bison, elk and bighorn sheep use the gorge, and encounters in a narrow canyon deserve real caution and a wide berth.
The valley carries a particular piece of American history. Custer’s 1874 expedition camped on French Creek and confirmed gold in its gravel, and the rush that followed broke the treaty that had guaranteed the Black Hills to the Lakota. The remnants of the Gordon Stockade stand near the park boundary. Fishing here is fishing a place whose consequences are still being argued about, and that is worth knowing before you go.
Practical planning matters more than tackle. The natural area requires a registration at the trailhead, water levels govern whether the gorge is passable at all, and spring runoff or a summer storm can make it genuinely dangerous. A short rod, felt or rubber-studded wading shoes, and a realistic estimate of daylight are the essentials. Most parties take a full day for the through-trip and many turn back partway rather than commit.
