About the Shenandoah River

The South Fork of the Shenandoah is one of the best smallmouth float rivers in the East and the anchor of a guiding economy that runs from Elkton to Front Royal. It is shallow, ledgy and warm, with long grass beds, rock gardens and current seams that hold smallmouth all summer, plus a genuine musky fishery for anglers willing to work for a low-percentage day. The mountain scenery, Massanutten on one side and the Blue Ridge on the other, does not hurt.

Guided days are raft and drift boat days from June through October, throwing poppers and Clouser minnows to the banks and ledges. The fish average modest and the numbers are high, which makes this excellent water for a first fly rod smallmouth trip or a family float. Fall is when the larger fish show up in the shallow water, and October on the South Fork is as good as valley fishing gets.

The Front Royal gauge reads the whole South Fork near its mouth. Roughly 400 to 1,500 cfs is the working range for float trips; low summer readings under a few hundred mean dragging the boat over ledges and better wade fishing, while a big spring or storm number puts the river off-color and moves the fish tight to the banks. The river clears within a few days after most rain events.

Luray, Bentonville, Front Royal and Shenandoah are the towns, with outfitters, canoe liveries and lodging along the whole run. Shenandoah National Park is right there for a brook trout morning on Big Run or the Rapidan if the valley heats up.

Port Republic and Island Ford: upper South Fork launches near the forks.

Inskeep and Massanutten: state wildlife access ramps.
Bentonville and Karo Landing: the classic lower floats toward Front Royal.
Front Royal: town access near the gauge above the confluence with the North Fork.

Most launches are Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources sites requiring an access permit or license.

Seasons

April and May: high water, pre-spawn smallmouth, musky fishing at its best.
June through August: the core float season, topwater mornings and evenings.
September and October: the best big-smallmouth weeks of the year, cooling water and fall color.
November through March: musky and cold-water fishing only; most outfitters are closed.
