About the Lake Claiborne
Lake Claiborne is the outlier among north Louisiana lakes. Where D Arbonne and Bistineau are shallow, stained and full of cypress, Claiborne is deeper, clearer and rockier, built in the 1970s on Bayou D Arbonne above Homer. Anglers who fish both in the same week notice the difference immediately.
Largemouth bass are the main fishery and the clarity changes how they are caught: lighter line, smaller profiles, and more attention to depth than to visible cover. Crappie hold on brush piles rather than on standing timber, which makes them harder to find and easier to catch once found.
Hybrid striped bass and white bass are stocked and give the lake an open-water fishery, schooling on shad in the main lake through the warmer months. Bream and redear fishing in the coves is excellent and the catfishing is dependable.
Lake Claiborne State Park sits on the shore with camping, cabins and a beach, and the lake is popular for swimming and skiing in summer, so the fishing is best early or on weekdays.
