About the Bayou Macon

Bayou Macon drains the flat farm country of northeast Louisiana, running south out of Arkansas along the eastern edge of the Macon Ridge before joining the Tensas River near Clayton. The gauge near Delhi sits in the middle of that run, in a landscape of cotton, soybeans and remnant bottomland hardwood. It is not a famous water and it is not a big one, but it is a genuinely good delta fishery that sees a fraction of the pressure of the Mississippi River oxbows a few miles east.

The bayou is narrow, slow and stained, with continuous cover in the form of laydowns, cypress knees, willow banks and the occasional deep bend hole. Sac-a-lait are the headline fish and they are excellent here, stacking on brush from February into April and again in the cooler weeks of autumn. Largemouth bass work the same wood and are usually fished with plastics and shallow-running baits. Bluegill and redear sunfish are abundant through the summer and are the reason a lot of local families launch at all. Catfish, mostly channels with flatheads in the deeper holes, are steady year round.

Water level is driven by rainfall in the upper basin and by agricultural drainage, which means the bayou can rise quickly and turn muddy after a storm and then drop back into shape within a few days. Anglers watch the Delhi gauge for exactly that reason.

This is small-boat and kayak water. The channel narrows and the deadfall thickens in places, and the best fishing is usually found by working a short stretch thoroughly rather than running the length of it. Poverty Point Reservoir sits just west of the upper bayou and gives anglers a second option when the bayou is muddy, which makes the Delhi area a practical base for a two-water trip.
