About the Rock River
The Rock River enters Illinois from Wisconsin just above Rockton and runs southwest through Rockford, Oregon, Dixon and Sterling before joining the Mississippi at Rock Island. The upper Illinois reach around Rockton and Roscoe is the section that draws anglers: a wide, shallow river over limestone ledge and gravel, broken by low-head dams that concentrate fish and create the rock structure smallmouth bass and walleye use. The USGS gauge at Rockton reports discharge and stage and is the standard reference for the whole upper reach.
Smallmouth bass are the defining fish. The ledge-and-gravel habitat above and below Rockton produces both numbers and size, and the river has a strong reputation among Midwest river-smallmouth anglers. Walleye and sauger use the deeper runs and the dam tailouts, with the spring and fall runs the most reliable times to target them. Northern pike hold in the backwaters and slower arms, channel and flathead catfish are abundant, and white bass, freshwater drum, black crappie and carp fill out a genuinely diverse warmwater fishery.
Guides fish it from jet and prop boats on the deeper reaches and from drift boats and kayaks up top, and wading is productive across the shallow ledge sections in summer. The low-head dams that concentrate fish are also the most dangerous feature on the river and should be portaged well clear — several have been modified or removed in recent years as part of ongoing restoration work in the Rockford area, which has improved both safety and fish passage.
Access is good through the Rockton, Roscoe and Rockford park districts and at state and county landings downstream. Illinois fishing licenses are required and the DNR link below carries the current statewide limits along with the smallmouth bass regulations that apply to designated river reaches. Anglers fishing near the state line should be careful about which side of the border they are on, since Wisconsin rules differ.
