Tallapoosa River Fishing Guides

The upper Tallapoosa above Lake Wedowee and Harris is Alabama's best-known shoal-bass river, a warm Piedmont stream floated for redeye and spotted bass over ledge and boulder.

About the Tallapoosa River

The Tallapoosa rises in the Georgia Piedmont and runs southwest across east Alabama toward the Coosa, and the USGS gauge at Wadley watches the free-flowing reach above Lake Wedowee that anglers actually float. This is not trout country and never has been. It is a warm, rock-floored Piedmont river that runs over long ledge shoals separated by slow green pools, and the fish that define it are black bass adapted to exactly that water. The gauge reports discharge and stage but no current water temperature series, so trip planning here runs on flow and on the calendar rather than on a thermometer reading.

What brings anglers from out of state is the redeye bass. The Tallapoosa strain is one of the signature stream bass of the Southeast, a small, hard-fighting fish that holds in the fastest broken water on the shoals and eats surface flies and small crankbaits with more enthusiasm than its size suggests. Spotted bass share the same shoals and run larger, largemouth hold in the deeper pools and backwaters, and channel and flathead catfish work the pool bottoms at night. Longear and redbreast sunfish are thick enough on the shoals that a light rod stays busy between bass.

Guided trips are float trips, run in rafts, canoes and small jet-capable johnboats depending on the section and the level. The shoals are shallow enough that a conventional drift boat is the wrong tool on most days. Outfitters working out of Wadley, Wedowee and Heflin sell the upper river as a wade-and-float combination, beaching the boat at the head of a shoal and fishing it down on foot, which is how most of the redeye come.

Read the Wadley gauge before you commit to a section. At low summer flow the shoals are technical and the pools between them are long drags; at high water the river turns pushy and off-color and the shoal fishing shuts off entirely. The productive window is broad through spring and again from September into November. Alabama licenses are required and the state regulations linked below carry current creel and size limits for black bass.

The photo at the top of this page is not Tallapoosa River.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. The license lasts until you withdraw it (section 4).

You keep the copyright. The license is not exclusive, so you can use the photo anywhere else and license it to anyone else. We will not sell your photo, license it on to anyone else on its own, or use it in paid advertising for a third party.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
