About the Ochlockonee River
The Ochlockonee begins in southern Georgia, crosses into Florida north of Tallahassee, and runs down through Lake Talquin before continuing to Ochlockonee Bay on the Gulf. The reach above the lake, near Havana and the Georgia line, is a dark, sand-bottomed blackwater river winding through hardwood bottomland and cypress. It is narrow enough in places to be shaded bank to bank, and the water carries the deep tannin stain typical of the panhandle. It is one of the more overlooked rivers in a state better known for its lakes and its saltwater.
What gives the upper river a distinct claim is shoal bass. This is one of a small number of Florida waters holding them, and they sit exactly where the name suggests, on the limestone and gravel shoals where the current picks up. They are aggressive, they fight above their weight, and catching one requires being on the right kind of water rather than covering distance. Around them the river holds a full complement of southern warmwater fish: largemouth in the slower bends, black crappie and redear sunfish in the backwaters, channel catfish through the deeper runs, and bowfin and longnose gar in the still water.
Fishing here is mostly a kayak or small-boat proposition. The upper river is too shallow and too obstructed for anything with much draft, and deadfall across the channel is routine. Below the dam the character changes to a broader, slower river running toward the coast, and further down it turns brackish and the species list turns saltwater. Flows respond quickly to rain in the Georgia headwaters, and the gauge near Havana is the number that tells an angler whether the shoals are covered or exposed.
