About the Middle Tyger River

The Middle Tyger River rises on the Blue Ridge escarpment and runs southeast through Spartanburg County to join the other Tyger forks above the Broad River. The gauge sits below Lyman Lake near Greer, and the station name states the relationship plainly: this is release water, and the reach below the impoundment behaves as a tailwater rather than as a free-flowing Piedmont stream. Drainage above the gauge is about forty-six square miles.

Tailwater conditions here mean flow that changes with lake management rather than with rainfall alone, and anglers who watch the gauge do better than those who do not. The river below the dam runs over bedrock shelves, gravel and shoal, with pools between, and it is small enough to wade in normal conditions. Rising water arrives quickly and is the main safety consideration on this reach.

Redeye bass are the signature fish of the upper Tyger system and the reason many anglers make the trip. They hold in the fast shoal water and the pockets behind rock, take small crankbaits and flies readily, and rarely grow large. Largemouth bass occupy the slower pools, bluegill and redbreast sunfish are abundant through the shoals, and black crappie use the deeper water. Channel and flathead catfish work the pools, and the flatheads reach substantial size.

The upstate is developing quickly around Greer and Duncan, and the corridor is more suburban than its fishing suggests. Public access points are limited and worth identifying in advance. The larger Tyger and the Broad River below offer bigger water for anglers who want it on the same trip. South Carolina manages the upstate rivers under general freshwater regulations, and a state licence covers the reach, but landowner permission governs much of the bank.
