About the Trinity River (California)

The Trinity is where a lot of Californians catch their first steelhead. It runs west out of Lewiston Dam through Douglas City, Junction City and Big Bar, down the Trinity Alps canyon country to Willow Creek and the Klamath confluence at Weitchpec. It is a manageable river, smaller than the Klamath and far smaller than the Sacramento, and it is the rare steelhead fishery where a competent angler can reasonably expect to hook fish on a multi-day trip.

Two seasons matter. Salmon show first, with fall chinook moving through from late summer into October and drawing both anglers and crowds. Steelhead follow, with the run building through October and November and continuing into spring; the winter fish are larger and the fall half-pounders are more numerous. Guided trips are drift boat trips, side-drifting or swinging depending on the guide’s preference, and the classic runs are Lewiston to Douglas City, Douglas City to Junction City and Junction City to Big Flat.

Flow below Lewiston Dam is managed under the Trinity River Restoration Program, and the pattern includes deliberate spring restoration releases that raise the river substantially for several weeks. Fall and winter fishing flows are usually modest, and guides work in a range that keeps the runs defined and the boat under control. A sharp winter rain event can double or triple the river in a day and drop visibility to nothing, then leave it fishing beautifully three days later.

Weaverville is the main town, with Lewiston, Junction City and Willow Creek strung along the river. This is remote country, cell service is spotty in the canyon, and winter driving over the passes needs respect.

Lewiston Dam and the Old Lewiston Bridge: top of the fishable river, walk-in and ramp access.
Cableway, Bucktail and Steel Bridge: upper river accesses between Lewiston and Douglas City.
Douglas City and Steiner Flat: BLM access, campground and ramp.
Junction City and Pigeon Point: mid-river ramps and campgrounds.
Big Bar, Big Flat and Hell Hole: lower canyon accesses along Highway 299.
Willow Creek and the lower river: access toward the Klamath confluence; tribal regulations apply on the reservation reach.

Seasons

Late August through October: fall chinook, then the first steelhead; the busiest weeks of the year.
November through January: prime steelhead, cold mornings, best numbers of fish.
February through April: winter and spring steelhead, larger fish, storm-driven flows.
May and June: restoration releases raise the river; trout fishing on the upper reach continues.
