About the Conococheague Creek
Conococheague Creek drains close to five hundred square miles of the Cumberland and Hagerstown valleys, rising in south central Pennsylvania and running south through Washington County, Maryland, to the Potomac River at Williamsport. That makes it by some margin the largest of the Hagerstown Valley limestone creeks, considerably bigger water than Antietam Creek to the east, and it fishes accordingly.
The valley it drains is limestone farm country, and the creek carries the characteristic signature of that geology: steady baseflow, moderated summer temperatures and high biological productivity. It is not a cold limestone spring run of the sort anglers picture when they hear the word limestoner. It is a substantial, moderately warm creek with excellent food production, and what that combination grows is smallmouth bass.
Smallmouth are the reason to fish it and the population is strong through the middle and lower reaches, holding on ledge outcrops, in the deeper bends and at the heads of riffles. Rock bass are everywhere and eager. Brown trout and rainbow trout occupy the colder upper reaches and tributaries where spring influence is strongest, largemouth bass hold in the slowest pools, and channel catfish occupy the deepest holes near the Potomac.
The size of the creek changes how it is fished. Through much of its Maryland length it is big enough to want a canoe or kayak at reasonable flows, and floating opens water that wading anglers cannot reach. At lower summer flows it becomes a wading stream again, with long shallow stretches between the deeper holding water. Reading the gauge before choosing between the two is worth doing.
Access comes from road crossings, county parks and the creek’s mouth at Williamsport, where the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park provides substantial public frontage along the Potomac. Elsewhere the surrounding land is largely private farmland, so anglers should work from public points and confirm boundaries. Hagerstown is close for lodging, food and tackle.
