About the Deer Creek

Deer Creek runs east across Harford County through the Maryland Piedmont and enters the Susquehanna River a short distance above the Chesapeake Bay. It drains a little under a hundred square miles at the Rocks gauge, and the reach around Rocks State Park is the one most anglers know: a boulder-strewn gorge where the creek cuts between steep wooded slopes beneath the outcrop the park is named for.

The creek is freestone rather than limestone, which means it responds quickly to rainfall and warms through the summer, but the gorge’s heavy shade and its steep, broken structure keep the middle reaches cooler and better oxygenated than the surrounding country would suggest. Long pools alternate with boulder pockets and short drops, and the water runs clear except after storms.

Trout are stocked in spring and the put-and-take fishing is heavily used in the first weeks of the season, with some fish holding over into summer in the deeper shaded pools. The more interesting fishery is the wild one that follows: smallmouth bass are well established through the middle and lower reaches, rock bass are abundant, and redbreast sunfish, American eel and channel catfish fill out the warmer water nearer the Susquehanna.

The lower creek does something the upper reaches do not. Being a direct tributary of the lower Susquehanna below Conowingo, it receives seasonal movement of migratory fish, and the reach near the mouth carries a different character and a different set of possibilities from the gorge above. The two ends of this creek reward being treated as separate fisheries.

Access is unusually good for a creek this close to a major metropolitan area. Rocks State Park provides substantial public frontage, parking and trail access through the gorge, Eden Mill Park sits upstream, and Susquehanna State Park covers the country near the mouth. Bel Air is close for lodging, food and tackle, and the park reaches see heavy summer recreational use, so early mornings fish best.
