About the Indian Lake

Indian Lake covers roughly fifty-eight hundred acres in Logan County and owes its existence to the canal era. It was enlarged in the nineteenth century as a feeder reservoir for the Miami and Erie Canal, flooding a natural marsh and a set of smaller lakes, and the resulting shoreline is irregular in a way no modern reservoir would be. Channels, islands, causeways and shallow bays break the lake into distinct areas. The gauge at Russells Point reports stage, elevation and water temperature.

Depth is the lake’s defining constraint. Average depth runs only a handful of feet and the deepest holes are modest, so the whole basin warms quickly, weeds establish heavily through summer and wind stirs the water column readily. Dredged channels running between the islands and along the shoreline provide the deeper water fish use when conditions push them off the flats, and those channels are the structure most local anglers organise their fishing around.

Saugeye are the headline fishery. Ohio stocks them here and they thrive in exactly this kind of shallow, fertile, turbid water, producing a reliable year-round fishery that peaks in fall and again through the ice. Crappie, both black and white, are abundant and heavily fished around the channel edges and brush. Largemouth bass use the vegetation and the shoreline cover, yellow perch and bluegill are common, and channel catfish, common carp and freshwater drum are always available.

Summer brings heavy recreational boat traffic from the lakeside communities, so serious fishing happens early, late or in the off season. The lake also freezes reliably in most winters, and the ice fishery is a genuine part of the annual cycle rather than an afterthought.

Access is excellent, with a state park, numerous ramps and a full service economy at Russells Point and Lakeview. Shoreline and pier fishing are both practical here, which is not true of every Ohio lake this size.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Indian Lake.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.

We hold that record for as long as the photo is published and for the retention period described in our privacy policy. Location data that your camera or phone embedded in the file is removed before the photo is published.
