Wiley’s Flies guides fly and spin anglers on the Saranac River and the other northern Adirondack rivers that see less pressure than the West Branch of the Ausable, and it names the Saranac among the water it runs guided trips on. The shop offers three ways to fish it: wade trips on big rivers and small streams, river floats in its own fishing boats, and pontoon trips up the Saranac chain of lakes carrying as many as ten people. It was the first outfitter in the northern Adirondacks to run those float trips and has decades of rowing experience behind them; drifting puts anglers on water nobody else can reach and keeps the day clear of crowds. Trout, bass, northern pike, musky and landlocked salmon are all on the card, and the shop also teaches anglers how to work lakes and ponds, locate the productive areas and choose the flies and methods that suit them. Which floats run, for which species and where, depends on river flows and weather, and private water comes at no additional charge.
