About the Sheyenne River below Devils Lake Outlet

This reach of the Sheyenne River sits immediately downstream of the Devils Lake state outlet near Bremen, in the drift prairie of Wells County. It is a tailwater of an unusual kind. Devils Lake is a closed basin with no natural outflow, and after decades of rising levels the state built outlets to move water out of it into the Sheyenne. What arrives below the outlet is therefore a managed release from a large lake rather than the natural runoff of a prairie catchment, and the difference shows in everything the gauge records.

The gauge reports temperature, discharge, stage, specific conductance and turbidity together, which is a fuller instrument package than most waters on this site carry, and it exists because this release is watched closely. Conductance matters here more than almost anywhere: Devils Lake water is considerably more mineralised than the Sheyenne’s own, and downstream salinity is the central management question governing when and how hard the outlet runs. For an angler the practical reading is simpler. When the outlet is running, the reach below it carries steadier, cooler, deeper water than a prairie river would otherwise hold in August; when it is shut, the river reverts to its natural low-summer character.

Northern pike are the dominant predator and the fish most anglers come for, holding in the deeper bends, against the bank cover and wherever the released flow creates a defined edge. Walleye and sauger use the same water and are taken consistently through the season. Perch, crappie and white bass are present in numbers, and channel catfish occupy the deeper holes. Access is prairie access: county roads, bridge crossings and a good deal of private land, so bank fishing at the crossings and small craft are the practical approach, and asking permission is normal here.
