New England Fly Company
Portland, Maine · Fishes Saco River
The river runs close to a hundred and forty miles from the White Mountains of New Hampshire through western and southern Maine before emptying into the Atlantic at Saco Bay, and the guides split it in two. The upper water around Fryeburg and Brownfield is where they send fly anglers for cold-water fishing: wild brook trout and brown trout, supplemented in places by stocking, worked by covering ground with big streamers and wet-fly trailers. As the river moves south toward Cornish, Limington and Buxton it warms into what they call one of Maine’s premier smallmouth bass fisheries, over rocky ledges, submerged timber and long pools. Prolific caddis, mayfly and stonefly hatches carry dry-fly fishing through early summer, and spring after ice-out is singled out as the season when the big trout feed hardest. Named access points on that stretch are the Saco River Canoe Access at Fryeburg, Walker Memorial Park at Brownfield, the Hiram and Cornish boat launches, and the public access near Salmon Falls on Route 202 between Hollis and Buxton.
