The French Broad starts in North Carolina and runs southwest 218 miles before it joins the Holston at Knoxville, and the thirty-two mile stretch from Douglas Dam down to the Tennessee River is the smallmouth bass water fished here. Floating is the method: the guides say it offers the best overall experience while covering water efficiently, on a river that stays scenic top to bottom with farmland and wildlife along the banks. Its main attraction is quality smallmouth, and the seasons for them are spring, summer and fall. Most floats run from drift boats, with rafts used depending on where the day goes and power boats when conditions call for it. Half day floats run four to five hours at $350 for one angler and $395 for two; full day floats run eight to ten hours at $475 and $525. Rods, reels, waders, boots, flies and tackle are all provided, full days include lunch and refreshments, and there is a $25 per boat discount for anglers who bring their own meal.
