Florence, Oregon · Fishes Siuslaw River Estuary
Chinook are the autumn draw, fished out of the Port of Siuslaw through September and October, and the tactic the business sets out is trolling herring: from the mouth of the jetty into the bay early in the season, then up into the Tidewater sections towards the end of it. From December to March the fishing transitions inland for winter steelhead, the sea-run form of the coastal rainbow that returns to fresh water after two or three years at sea and that gives this business its name. The guide points anglers at a string of named stretches on the tributaries: Whittaker to Wildcat, Wildcat down to Linslaw, and the lower section of Lake Creek and Green Creek near Deadwood. Retention of fin-clipped steelhead is open on the main stem above Whittaker Creek, which is where the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program put a large number of smolts in each year. All fishing gear is provided and anglers bring their own Oregon licence and tags.
