San Juan River Fly Fishing
Navajo Dam, New Mexico · Fishes San Juan River
Trips run on the San Juan River below Navajo Dam in northern New Mexico, on the Quality Waters immediately downstream of the dam and on the lower river further along. Full days cover seven to eight hours and are priced at $500 for one angler, $550 for two, and $650 for three on wade trips. The lower river float, a roughly nine mile run from the village of Navajo Dam to the Hammond Tract through lightly pressured private water, is an eight hour drift boat day at $625 for one or two anglers. Half day and evening float options fill out the schedule. Brown and rainbow trout are the fish. Summer brings long days, active trout, and dry fly work over baetis, pale morning duns, caddis, midges, and terrestrials, while the lower float leans on hoppers, dry dropper rigs, streamers, and nymphing as conditions dictate. Rods, reels, terminal tackle, and safety equipment come with the trip.
