Streamside Custom Rod & Guide Service
Fairview, Michigan · Fishes Au Sable River
The Au Sable is guided in distinct pieces. The 30 miles from Mio Dam to Alcona Dam is the big water, described as 100 to 150 feet wide and averaging four feet deep, and the operation calls it the holding water for trophy brown trout, fished hardest in April and May and again from October into December. Alcona Dam down to Foote Dam turns into smallmouth bass water in July and August. Below Foote Dam to Lake Huron is the migratory reach, with steelhead from March into May, salmon and steelhead from September through November, and Atlantic salmon from October into December. The South Branch through the Mason Tract wilderness is also fished. Hatches followed include the Hendrickson, brown drake, isonychia, Hexagenia limbata and the white fly. Overnight hex trips, nighttime dry fly and mousing outings, cast and blast days and Lake Huron fly fishing round out the offerings.
