The Bill Williams River below Alamo Dam is one of the odder fisheries in Arizona and one of the least crowded. Alamo Dam holds back the combined Santa Maria and Big Sandy drainages in a canyon in the western desert, and the USGS gauge immediately below the dam reads the release that keeps a thin ribbon of permanent water running west toward the Colorado River at Lake Havasu. The gauge reports discharge and stage; there is no current water temperature series on it, so anglers judge conditions from release volume and season rather than from a thermometer.

This is a tailwater without trout. Releases from Alamo are not cold enough to hold them, and the fishery that has developed instead is a warmwater one built on largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish and crappie that move up out of the lower river and the Havasu backwaters. Smallmouth turn up in the faster rock sections nearer the dam. What makes the reach worth fishing is the corridor itself: below the dam the river runs through one of the last intact cottonwood and willow bottoms in the Lower Colorado basin, a green tunnel in country that is otherwise creosote and rock.

Access shapes everything here. There is no float-trip industry on the Bill Williams the way there is on Arizona’s Salt or Verde. Most fishing is done on foot from the Alamo Lake State Park side below the dam, from the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge at the downstream end where the river meets Havasu, and by boat pushing up into the delta from the lake. Guided work is generally a Havasu bass guide running the delta and the lowest river rather than a dedicated river outfitter.

Release schedule is the whole story on timing. Low steady releases leave a wadeable, clear, intimate stream; flood-control releases after a wet winter turn it into something else entirely and can rework the channel. Spring and fall are the comfortable windows in a place where summer air temperatures routinely pass a hundred and ten degrees. Seasons

Spring: the best window of the year, with warming water, comfortable air temperatures and bass moving shallow in the delta and lower river.
Summer: brutally hot and fished at dawn and after dark, mostly for catfish; releases can spike with monsoon inflow.
Fall: cooling water and steady low releases make the upper tailwater walk-and-wade pleasant again.
Winter: cool, clear and low; fishing slows but access is easy and the corridor is at its most comfortable.
