About the Trinidad Lake
Trinidad Lake sits in the broken country where the southern Colorado plains give way to the Sangre de Cristo foothills, four miles west of Trinidad and within sight of the Spanish Peaks on a clear day. It is an impoundment of the Purgatoire River, roughly seven hundred acres at a normal pool, and the surrounding state park wraps most of the shoreline in public land with camping, trails and two boat ramps. The setting is high plains rather than alpine, with pinon and juniper on the slopes and cottonwood in the draws, and the lake is noticeably warmer through the summer than the mountain reservoirs an hour to the north.
That warmth is why it fishes the way it does. Trinidad is one of the few Colorado reservoirs where walleye, smallmouth bass and channel catfish are the main event rather than an afterthought to trout. Walleye are the fish most anglers come for and they hold along the rocky points and the old river channel, smallmouth bass are abundant on the broken rock of the north shore, and largemouth and crappie fill in the coves at the upper end where the Purgatoire comes in. Colorado Parks and Wildlife still stocks rainbow trout and wipers, so a day here can produce a genuinely mixed bag, which is unusual in a state whose reservoirs mostly specialise.
The gauge reports reservoir elevation, and on this water the elevation record is worth reading before a trip. Trinidad is an irrigation and flood control project on a river with a flashy snowmelt and monsoon regime, so the pool swings more than a natural lake would. A low late summer pool concentrates fish and exposes the rock structure that is otherwise submerged; a full spring pool floods the willow at the inlet and pushes bass and crappie into cover that is only reachable for a few weeks.

The photo at the top of this page is not Trinidad Lake.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
