About the Lake Trafford

Lake Trafford covers about sixteen hundred acres on the western edge of the Big Cypress basin at Immokalee, and it is the largest natural lake in Florida south of Lake Okeechobee. It is shallow throughout – averaging only a few feet – which makes it warm, fertile and quick to respond to weather, and it drains west into the Corkscrew and Imperial river systems. Its recent history is unusual and worth knowing before booking, because the lake anglers fish today is essentially a rebuilt one.

By the early 2000s decades of accumulated organic muck had smothered the bottom, killed the submerged vegetation and driven repeated fish kills. A large state and federal dredging project removed millions of cubic yards of that sediment through the late 2000s, native vegetation returned, and the fishery came back strongly. The result is one of the better small-water bass and crappie fisheries in southwest Florida, and one that local guides worked hard to get back. Largemouth bass are the year-round draw, and black crappie – specks, locally – are the winter fishery that fills the calendar from December through March.

Bluegill, redear sunfish, tilapia, bowfin, longnose gar and channel catfish round out the list, and alligators are a genuine and constant presence that anglers should treat with respect. The lake is shallow enough that wind is the limiting factor on most days, and airboat and shallow-draft traffic is common. This gauge near Immokalee reports lake elevation from two separate elevation series and carries no water temperature, which is exactly the number that matters here: at low water in the spring dry season, launching and navigating the shallow margins becomes the practical constraint on where a boat can fish at all.
